Saturday, June 26, we made it to Custer Mountain campground in the heart of the Black hills. On the way we stopped at Wall Drug and saw some cool goats on the side of the road. Another long day on the road, cool and rainy.
We made it to our campground mid afternoon but with the time change who knows? The facilities (toilets) are about 1/2 mile away so it takes some strategic planning in the morning.
Sunday was a full day of revisiting the area after 30 years. First stop was Crazy Horse which is a very interesting story. It looked at first like not much has changed but in reality a lot of progress has been done. Then we were off to Mt. Rushmore, Black Hills National Forest, Needles Highway and lunch in Custer. So much beauty in one area.
And more beauty on Monday as we drove thru Custer State Park which includes the Wildlife Loop. We saw antelope, deer, big horn sheep, burros and bison. The park itself is awesome and the animals are a bonus. Bison slowly cross in front of cars and there’s not even a crosswalk
We got to our campsite in the Roosevelt National Forest outside Ft. Collins CO mid afternoon on Tuesday. Kinda hard to find but once we did. OMG. So beautiful next to a river.
The last day of June found us at Steamboat Lake State Park in northern Colorado. Another absolutely beautiful spot with lots of campsites and a lake right in the middle.
